Top 3 things I learned at my first NABJ conference

For those of you wondering where I’ve been and why But…Don’t Take My Advice has been on a hiatus, I want to first say that I have a small excuse.

I been busy.

All aboard the ‘Nicki Minaj hate train’: Can the Queen pump the breaks, or is she simply too far off the tracks?

I remember when I first heard Nicki Minaj’s debut project Beam Me Up Scottie.

I literally played it on repeat until I knew every word to “Itty Bitty Piggy,” “I Get Crazy,” “Easy,” “Kill Da DJ,” “Go Hard”… just writing out that list made me want to go back and listen to that mixtape at this very second.

Fast forward almost 10 years later and I am actively skipping and dodging every Nicki verse that has come out in the past few months. Continue reading “All aboard the ‘Nicki Minaj hate train’: Can the Queen pump the breaks, or is she simply too far off the tracks?”

Plot Twist: We actually didn’t need an ‘all rap’ OR ‘all R&B’ album from Drake

Damn.

Scorpion was just okay as f.

If you’ve been following me and my writing thus far (you can even go a few posts back), you know that I champion Drake as my favorite artist time and time again.

So critiquing him is never easy, but I have to be fair! Continue reading “Plot Twist: We actually didn’t need an ‘all rap’ OR ‘all R&B’ album from Drake”

Learning the balance between being inspired by others & comparing your journeys: What’s your advice?

I think this is something everyone in their mid-20’s struggles with.

Your 20’s are supposed to be spent figuring life out, chasing your dreams, choosing a path and then changing your mind and choosing another. And I know that sounds like a cheesy graduation speech, but I swear from conversations I’ve had amongst friends and colleagues around my age (25), it feels like everyone is still trying to find their own way.

I know I am. Continue reading “Learning the balance between being inspired by others & comparing your journeys: What’s your advice?”

Pusha T hurt my feelings: Confessions of a loyal Drake fan

I don’t even know where to begin.

If you have been following my blog and podcast up until this point, you know where my feelings lie when it comes to Drake.

I stan.

So you can imagine the reaction I had to Pusha T’s round 2 (of this particular battle because this feud has been going on for some time now) diss track, The Story of Adidon. Continue reading “Pusha T hurt my feelings: Confessions of a loyal Drake fan”

How many times does Drake have to prove himself to be a credible “rapper”?

*Disclaimer: I am a biased Drake fan. Read it anyways and fight me if you want!

Unless you are living under a rock, you have probably seen or heard by now that Drake has submersed himself into another rap beef, this time with former “Clipse” member and current G.O.O.D. Music rapper Pusha T.

I actually had about 3 or 4 paragraphs written up to recap and give a background history of what happened on Friday.

But then I said “eff all that, let’s get right to the sh*ts.”

What ‘Lil Tay’ being exposed as a fraud says about those of us who made her “famous”

And by “us”…I mean Y’ALL.

I legit had never heard of “Lil Tay” until like a month ago when she popped up on The Shade Room in a video where she was defending some little girl named “Woah Vicky” and they were about to fight the Cash Me Outside girl also known as “Bhad Bhabie.” Continue reading “What ‘Lil Tay’ being exposed as a fraud says about those of us who made her “famous””

Why am I still hesitant to get braids & natural styles in fear of looking “unprofessional” at work?

Today my black female coworker walked into the office with some bomb ass feed-in braids. The first thing I thought after admiring her courage to get cornrows and wear them in the workplace, was how jealous I was that I hadn’t had the confidence to do the same. I give props to ‘Dear White People,’ Season 2 for tackling these 5 controversial issues:

courtesy of newonnetflix.ca

Volume 2 of the racially charged controversial Netlfix series Dear White People aired on May 4th, and it only took me a day and a half to binge all 10 episodes.

As with all things, I was late to watch the first season after it aired in 2017, (binged it only maybe three months ago), so last season was pretty fresh in my mind when I ventured into the season 2.  Continue reading “I give props to ‘Dear White People,’ Season 2 for tackling these 5 controversial issues:”

I’m trash for sleeping on Donald Glover

About six years ago, I was waitressing at a restaurant called “The Tilted Kilt” in Pittsburgh, down on the North Shore (no judgement please). It was a late June evening– the restaurant was half empty after the rush cleared out from people who were headed to a concert at Stage AE, and I was ready to clock out.
