The top most memorable hip-hop moments of Summer 2018

Summer has officially come to a close and 2018 brought us some of the most memorable, shocking, sad and intense moments in hip-hop and the entertainment industry.

It seems like there were a heightened number of beefs, a tragic amount of deaths, and some peace-making moments in between.

Whether you saw the rise or fall of your favorite artist, 2018 has been one of the most out of pocket and entertaining years in a long time.

Here are some of the most iconic hip-hop moments of 2018:

Drake vs Pusha T & Kanye West

There have been many rappers and artists to challenge Drake in some form or fashion over his 10 year career, but very few have actually got him to step in the booth and lay down an entire diss record.

Not to say Drake doesn’t address his critics.

Aubrey is very known to throw out a few subs in the middle of a song i.e., at Common, Joe Budden, Diddy and occasionally even Jay-Z.

However not since 2015 have we seen Drake actually drop a diss track, when he pretty much harassed Meek Mill for an entire summer.

But for some reason, when Pusha T slid in a bar on his Daytona album about Drake’s ghost-writing rumors and even mentioning his Achilles heel, Quentin Miller, Drake felt like he had time that day.

And we all know what happened next. Drake’s Duppy Freestyle was responded to with The Story of Adidon from Pusha T just a few days later, where Pusha exposed Drake actually had a son that he hadn’t told the world about, along with a lot more disrespectful bars about his parents, his camp and his personal life.

Drake never responded, and the beef was soon ended by his “OG” J Prince.

But this was the first time that many hip-hop fans and industry folk alike would say arguably the biggest artist in the world actually took a L.

Come to find out, the beef was more-so towards Kanye West the entire time!

This was a major moment because the two have worked together plenty of times in the past and this is this is the first time we’ve seen any public tension arise between the two, even prompting some rumors about Kanye selling Drake out to Pusha, and Drake having past relations with Ye’s wife Kim K.

I think it’s safe to say the drama between those two is far from over.

And speaking of Kanye…

Kanye shows support for Donald Trump

This was by far one of the most memorable and controversial moments of 2018. Kanye West, who has forever used his platform to uplift people of color and shed light on injustice through his music and messaging did a complete 180 and aligned himself with Donald Trump.

It’s no secret Trump has been called a racist, a bigot, and one of, if not the most divisive presidents to ever lead this country. So when Kanye put on that “Make America Great Again” hat, the internet and the world went up in a frenzy.

That moment spun off into his infamous “Slavery was a choice” comments on TMZ, and it was pretty much all down here from there.

Kanye has since “apologized” for how he made people feel. But it’s tough to say if he can ever truly regain his respect from the black community and reshape his image after that PR nightmare.

One word: BEYCHELLA

If you know anything about me, you know I am an avid and active member of the Beyhive and president of my chapter. So as a disclaimer, everything I am about to say going forward is probably completely bias.

But you GOT to give credit where it’s due.

Now even though Coachella was in April, I’m still claiming this as a huge summer 2018 moment. Beyoncé graced the stage and blessed the world by live streaming a nearly 2-hour performance filled with almost 30 songs… not even a year after giving birth to twins, I might add.

The performance featured a choir, a marching band, nods to HBCU and black Greek culture, a dance routine with Solange, an appearance from Jay-Z, the black national anthem, the swag surf, PLUS a Destiny’s Child reunion.

Need I say more?

Nah. I will just quote the queen on why this was a historical moment in pop culture history, period.

“Thank you for letting me be the first black woman to headline Coachella. Ain’t that ’bout a bitch?”

Tragic Deaths

Hip-hop was hit hard this summer with a few tragic deaths of young up and coming rappers.

The murders of both XXXtentacion and Pittsburgh rapper Jimmy Wapo on the same exact day came as a shock to the rap community and fans alike.

While XXXtentacion was known for being controversial, with allegations of domestic abuse, his death certainly got everyone talking, no matter what side you were on.

Another heartbreaking moment came with the passing of another Pittrburgh-born rapper, Mac Miller who allegedly overdosed in his California apartment. Mac had just released his last album Swimming a few weeks prior. The outpouring of grief and love displayed by his fans, friends and peers in hip-hop showed just how many lives he touched and how taken aback everyone was by this sad moment.

And of course, we have to acknowledge the passing of Aretha Franklin. Although the R&B Soul legend already left her mark on the world, her death was felt by many who were inspired by her, or grew up listening to her music. Even her funeral brought about some pretty wild moments.

Rest in Peace to them all.

Cardi B vs Nicki Minaj

So this is one that has been bubbling up for quite some time.

While the public dispute between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B during an after party at NY Fashion Week didn’t necessarily come as a shock to anyone, it was certainly a memorable moment this year.

Arguably the two most relevant female rappers in the game right now have been hinting at and avoiding and dodging and circling around and feeding into tension for quite a few months, dating back to their features on the Migos’ Motorsport record.

But up until now, the two tried to keep their disdain for each other under wraps, no matter how hard the media and fans continued to stir up the pot.

That all came to a head when Cardi B reportedly confronted Nicki at a party, accusing her of pressuring people not to work with her and claiming Nicki criticized her mothering skills.

None of that is confirmed and Nicki denied it on her Queen radio show, but what we DO know is that a shoe was thrown, and Cardi walked out the party with a knot on her forehead, (proudly I might add.)

I haven’t been the biggest fan of Nicki’s actions as of late, but in an ideal world these two would get a long and make music TOGETHER. But after that crazy moment, it’s doubtful that that relationship could ever be mended.

But speaking of making up…

Icons squash the beef

While 2018 included a lot of controversy and negativity for Drake, he seems to have bypassed that hate and allowed some love and forgiveness into his life.

Well.. for some people. He’s still sub-dissing Kanye.

But while hints of Drake and Meek Mill squashing the beef have been imminent since Meek went to prison, the two former friends-turned-foes finally made it public that their drama has bee laid to rest.

Drake brought Meek out on stage during his Aubrey and the Three Amigos tour stop in Boston and documented the reunion with a heart-felt caption.

And with all the beef and drama that seemed to have consumed the first half of the year, fans and industry moguls alike all showed support and respect for this very major moment.

And in more Young Money news…Lil Wayne finally settled his lawsuit and beef with his former boss and mentor Birdman.

The two were continuously feuding for nearly four years, after wayne sued Cash Money records back in 2014 claiming they owed him $51 MILLION. That ain’t no small beef. That’s a BIG beef.

But Birdman publicly apologized to Wayne at the end of August at Lil Weezyana Fest and now fans are patiently awaiting the release of the Carter V that has been held hostage this entire feud.

Glad to see the crazy summer ended with some peace and harmony.

Surely there will be more insane crazy moments to come to wrap up the year, but of course we all hope that it doesn’t involve violence. But a little bit of trash talk is what keeps hip-hop thriving.
