All aboard the ‘Nicki Minaj hate train’: Can the Queen pump the breaks, or is she simply too far off the tracks?

I remember when I first heard Nicki Minaj’s debut project Beam Me Up Scottie.

I literally played it on repeat until I knew every word to “Itty Bitty Piggy,” “I Get Crazy,” “Easy,” “Kill Da DJ,” “Go Hard”… just writing out that list made me want to go back and listen to that mixtape at this very second.

Fast forward almost 10 years later and I am actively skipping and dodging every Nicki verse that has come out in the past few months.

As a fan, she’s wearing me out in more ways than one, and I am slowly but surely starting to turn in my Barb membership card.

I think it’s fair to say that the consensus across the hip-hop world is that Nicki hasn’t been making her best music as of late.

Even though Nicki has been letting me down more and more, I still try and give her the benefit of the doubt and listen to whatever she drops, waiting to feel that feeling I had when I first heard Beam Me Up Scotty or even Pink Friday. I keep expecting bars like those on “Monster,” or some of my other favorite features from her (“Bottom’s Up,” “5-star remix,” “A$$,” “Up All Night”)

But her most recent verse on Tekashi 6ix9ine’s new single “FEFE” is only supporting the argument that the Queen of rap is slippinggggggg.

“He tryna 69 like Tekashi, call him papi. Word to A$AP, keep me Rocky”… REALLY NICK?

You STARTED the verse with them lazy metaphors?

“AC just stopped workin’ so they hit me, Told me bring my wrist back”.. GET IT?? Because it’s icy… no?

Granted– I am a journalist so I must present both sides: there were actually a lot of people who LIKED the song. Which is beyondddd me. The video got nearly 12M views in a day.

But I’m not even going to hold one feature with mixed reviews over her head. It’s the consistency of the mixed reviews that has me, as a fan, left disappointed.

I know it’s cliché to say “We want the old Nicki back,” but is it just the music that has her looking funny in the light these days?

Nope. To me, it’s her latest antics and personality flaws that have me straying further and further away from Barb-land.

It seems as though Nicki has been dying for attention lately- and her “Oh, hey look at me! Don’t forget what I accomplished” routine is becoming exhausting.

Is it a mere coincidence that as soon as another female hip-hop artist came on the scene and began dominating the Billboard charts, magazine covers and got an outpouring of support from celebs and fans across the world (*coughs #Bardigang), that Nicki feels the need to post every time her song or feature appears on the Swedish Itune charts? Or the trends for a night to twitter? Or gets a stat on the “mainstream r&b/hip-hop air play chart”?

And I’m not trying to come off as a hater. I will always respect Nicki for ascending to the biggest female rap icon in history. Nobody argues that. But that is actually my point in all this- you are the BIGGEST female rap artist. Your songs are SUPPOSED to chart 10 years into your career.

Act like you been here before, sis!

You don’t see Rihanna or Beyoncé or even her Young Money partner Drake posting every single time they release a song or a verse and people actually listen to it.

And this is all happening while Nicki is announcing that her upcoming album Queen will be her “best work yet”, after making the “world stop” dropping two singles the week after Cardi B’s album came out in April, promising a June release date, and then making a weird Instagram post in dark dramatic sunglasses telling us her album is coming out in August instead.

Antics aside, and she keeps hopping on songs this summer that aren’t very good. I actually started to gain my love for her back at the beginning of this year when she went missing from social media for a few months. So why hop on a controversial artist like Tekashi’s song when you have an album coming out.. Make us miss you sis!!!

Idk man. The BarbZ will probably kill me for this. I already got threatened by a Nicki fan page for a comment I made on the But…Don’t Take My Advice podcast, critiquing the comments she made in Elle magazine a few weeks ago.

I know it’s the new cool thing to hate on Nicki, but eventually the Barbz gotta sit back and wonder how much of it she’s bringing on herself.

Especially when she’s making songs like FEFE. Smh.

  1. I feel that a rapper’s job is fairly difficult. Imagine having to come up with different, diverse, quirky, imaginative, new, spunky, boss, literate, un-repetitive, hip, head-bobbing, likeable, and ultimately money making lyrics on the regular. Even the most popular and/or seasoned poets have to dig down deep to come up with new lyrics or rap once they’ve been in the game for a minute. I only wish we could have witnessed the genius of Tupac and Biggie all these years later had they lived up to this point. Gone too soon!! But I digress. Give her some compassion. Rapping for 10 plus years can burn anyone out. There are only so many ways to string together words into “rap” without them sounding redundant.
